I’ve been a huge fan of Ben Templesmith’s work in comics for a few years now, and ever since 30 Days of Night, he’s produced some of the most horrifying, dynamic and powerful comic art I’ve ever seen. I enjoyed his creator-owned project Welcome to Hoxford more than I thought I would, given the concept, but I have to say that I loved this short film adaptation. There are some moments in it that give some subtlety that the comic lacked in most places (the dead mother scene, the shot under the warden’s desk, etc.), and Jason Flemyng makes a phenomenal Ray Delgado. The photography is beautiful and the “beasts” are actually pretty well-executed, given how closely their design resembles those in the comic. The final shot is just perfect.
